This September and October, discover a new contemporary painting exhibition beneath the railway arches at Shepherd’s Bush Market. If you are looking for an Art Gallery in West London with a setting a little different from the usual white-walled gallery space, this autumn, Freddie Foulkes Gallery presents The Secret Garden, an exhibition of contemporary painting inspired by Frances Hodgson Burnett’s much-loved 1911 novel.
Bringing together work by five artists, the exhibition explores our relationship with nature and the way the changing world around us can reflect our own lives. And with the gallery sitting right in the heart of Shepherd’s Bush Market, a visit can easily become part of a wider afternoon exploring the shops, food and independent businesses that make this corner of West London what it is.
The exhibition takes its name from Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, a story in which nature plays a central role in growth, recovery and change. As the seasons move through the novel, the garden changes with them. Its condition often mirrors what is happening in the lives of the characters themselves.
It is this connection between people and the natural world that provides the starting point for the exhibition at Freddie Foulkes Gallery. Nature has been a subject for artists for centuries, but our relationship with it continues to change. The Secret Garden brings that conversation into the present day through contemporary painting, asking visitors to consider how artists see and respond to nature now.
