Ethiopian New Year is just around the corner, and there is a hands-on way to discover more about Ethiopian culture right here in Shepherd’s Bush.
On Friday 11 September 2026, Ethiopia celebrates Enkutatash, the beginning of a new year and the first day of Meskerem, the opening month of the Ethiopian calendar. It is a celebration associated with renewal, family and coming together, with traditions including shared meals, visits, coffee ceremonies and the yellow flowers that appear as Ethiopia’s rainy season comes to an end.
If you would like to do more than simply read about Enkutatash, Delina Kitchen’s Ethiopian Pottery Making and Sip experience offers the chance to get creative and learn something new at the same time.
Led by Delina Cafe owner Nazareth, the two-hour workshop introduces you to Ethiopian pottery through beginner-friendly hand-building techniques. You will work with clay to mould and sculpt your own incense burner, before carving and decorating it with a design of your choice.
Everything you need is provided, so there is no need to arrive with any pottery experience. In fact, the class is specifically designed with beginners in mind. It is as much about slowing down and enjoying the process as it is about producing the perfect pot. Grab a drink, get your hands into the clay and spend a couple of hours making something completely your own.
For regulars in Shepherd’s Bush, Delina Kitchen may already be a familiar name.
Nazareth started Delina Ethiopian Food in July 2013, originally trading as an Ethiopian street food stall in West London. The business travelled around local markets in Shepherd’s Bush, Hammersmith and Fulham, sharing Ethiopian recipes before going on to work at food markets and events around the UK.
Today, Nazareth runs a range of Ethiopian experiences from Shepherd’s Bush, including cooking classes, coffee roasting workshops and this pottery class.
The Ethiopian Pottery Making and Sip experience lasts two hours and takes place in Shepherd’s Bush.
Tickets are currently listed at £35 for adults and £25 for children. Public workshops accommodate between one and five people, while private sessions can be arranged for groups of eight to twelve. All the materials needed to make your pottery incense burner are included.
