If you’re craving Art in West London that goes beyond the usual gallery visit, this is for you. From 16th to 24th January 2026, West London-based sound artist Esther Kehinde Ajayi brings her completed Re-humanise Me collection to Shepherd’s Bush Market.

This is the official debut of Ajayi’s “sonic unit” series, marking a new era in her practice. She defines a sonic unit as an audio-sculptural system that triggers sound in space as an act of sonic display”. In other words, the artworks don’t just sit there. They wait for you to reveal their sounds.

Shepherd’s Bush Market is a fitting home for this kind of work. The market has welcomed new ideas for generations. It officially opened in 1914 beneath the railway arches. That mix of everyday life and shared space still defines it today.

What you’ll experience:

Ajayi’s collection moves through four stages, and your role changes each time.

First, you arrive as an “encounterer.”

You meet three striking basic sonic unit models. Each structure carries minimalist hand-painted writing from the artist. You’ll see bright white frames holding the “brain” of each piece. At this point, the work explores systemic beauty and the fashion of sound. It also shifts your sense of scale and space.

Then, you become a “contemplator.”

Each sonic unit features bright red bull horns and a big red button. You start to notice the invitation to interact. However, you also face a clear choice. A signing station shares sonic information and terms. Ajayi asks that you sign your name if you wish to trigger the collection’s sounds.

Next, you become an “instigator.”

You either choose to continue the silence or take action toward amplification. This matters either way. The decision not to interact carries real weight as silence becomes part of the artwork.

Finally, you become a “participatory listener.”

If you choose to push the button, you activate a 30–60 second piece of sound design. You will hear laughter, speech, nature, and more. Your action changes the space for everyone. Therefore, the work asks you to reflect on personal power, consequence and collective reality.
